The Light Touch at Café Alfresco in Brewster
by Tom O'Connell, The Cape Cod Rover
In Italian “al fresco” means “in the fresh air.” Founder Marcia Clark told me that when Café Alfresco was established 12 years ago at Lemon Tree Village in Brewster the idea was to serve light take-out food.
The building lends itself to take-out with its long and large deck on the side of the restaurant and another smaller yet roomy porch out front. Umbrellas shade the tables and it’s a pleasant place to relax in the fresh air and dine.
After a while the space expanded to include a large dining room inside with an inviting Italian décor and round tables. Having dined both inside and out in Rome, I was taken with Café Alfresco’s continental atmosphere when I first experienced it many years ago. After experiencing some of the challenges of driving on Cape Cod, I’ve often felt as I entered Alfresco that I was stopping at an oasis.
As you enter the restaurant you will see offerings posted and you may seat yourself at your pleasure, indoors or outside. You will also see a display case with muffins and croissants and other delicacies. Marcia says, “We bake all of our pastries and some of our desserts.”

The key word at Café Alfresco is “casual.” Add the word “delicious” and you’ve got “casual and delicious.” Outside, there’s also a casual/contemporary look.
Marcia’s son Dale is now the owner but if you peek into the kitchen you will see both mother and son giving their special touch to the vast array of freshly prepared foods they offer on their menu.
Café Alfresco is open 7 days a week year-round for breakfast, lunch or a light supper. In summer it’s open until 8 pm and until 4 pm in other seasons.
For breakfast you might enjoy the Omelette Of The Day or choose to Create Your Own Omelette. How about Eggs Burrito, Egg Sandwich on Ciabatta, Crispy Corned Beef Hash & Eggs, Lox’s & Bagel, Eggs Crostini, or perhaps a Fruit Bagel?
Over the years Café Alfresco has become renowned for its Panini Sandwiches pressed on Ciabatta bread Italian style. There are several different kinds of Panini sandwiches including Muffuletta, Tuna Alfresco, Grilled Vegetable, and Roast Beef.
From the grill you may order a Hamburger Royale, a Garden Burger, or a Philly Steak & Cheese Roll. Specialty sandwiches include Turkey Alfresco, the Virginian, Chicken Salad, and more.
